Ed Dixon is not your average music maker. In the daytime he is a hardworking stockbroker operating from the heart of London's bustling financial centre known as 'The City'. At night he becomes 'The Payroll', an uncompromising sample selector of the third kind, searching and stealing his way to that 'Payroll' grove that enables him to finally relax after a hard days trading. Being a stickler for the basics and a follower of minimalism, Ed Dixon chooses to shun modern studio methods by working on one simple hand held sampler: the Yamaha SU10. This great little machine goes to prove that it is the ideas that make the music what it is, and not the equipment used in the process. On his first release (Due out December 1999) we hear a unique blend of Groove and intellect combined to give the listener a feel good reception. The workings 'The Payroll' go against the grain of current 'beats' orientated music, and would be more at home in Lo-fi surroundings, than in any Big Beat bargin bin. This debut release by one of the UK's most modest recording artists, will surely suprize you those who believed the stock market was just for those with an uncompromising quest for power and wealth and a common disregard for humanity. On listening, you may be shocked to discover that infact the City is alive with the sound of Music. |
